A little while ago there was a call our from our NICU for teeny tiny hats for the little ones in care. I couldn’t find a pattern I liked so I ended up making my own.  On Tuesday I’m dropping of 18 of these teeny tiny hats.

Preemie Hat Crochet Instructions

Made from Stretchy sock yarn and a 3.5 size hook, (Size E).

You can use your preferred material and matching hook size. Increase another row based on the pattern to make the size bigger or smaller. Additional size options below.

This is a pattern made with a spiral pattern with no joins at the ends of rows. Use a stitch marker to help note the start of each row.

DC – double crochet
Sl – slip stitch
St – stitch

Preemie Hat – This pattern with a 3.5 mm hook makes a hat with a 12” circumference)

Begin with a magic circle and then CH 1
Row 1: 10 DC in the magic circle – 10
Row 2: 2 DC in every st – 20
Row 3: (2 DC in the first st, 1 DC in the next st) – repeat 10 times – 30
Row 4: (2 DC in the first st, 1 DC in the next 2 st) – repeat 10 times – 40
Row 5: (2 DC in the first st, 1 DC in the next 3 st) – repeat 10 times – 50
Row 6: (2 DC in the first st, 1 DC in the next 4 st) – repeat 10 times – 60
Row 7 – 11: 1 DC in each st – 60
Row 12: 1 SC in each st – 60 – Be careful to keep this loose so there isn’t a tight edge
Finish with a sl, finish and weave in ends.

If you want to make this larger just continue the pattern with increases by adding another row of increases as in the example below or by adding a couple more rows of SC to add Rows 13 and 14. It just depends on the shape that you need.

For example one size larger would be as below. This is more of a newborn size.
Row 7: (2 DC in the first st, 1 DC in the next 5 st) – repeat 10 times – 70
Row 8 – 13: 1 DC in each st – 70
Row 14: 1 SC in each st – 70 – Be careful to keep this loose so there isn’t a tight edge
Finish with a sl, finish and weave in ends.
